Four named to NFCA Mid-Atlantic All-Region teams

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – As Lehigh prepares to make its third straight NCAA regional appearance, four Mountain Hawks were named to the Mid-Atlantic All-Region teams by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. Senior catcher Mary Wieder, sophomore centerfielder Kate Marvel and freshman pitcher Lisa Sweeney earned first team All-Region honors, while junior right fielder Julie Sterrett was named to the second team. The four All-Region selections tie a school record set by the 2001 Mountain Hawks.

All four Mountain Hawks selected earned the first All-Region honors of their careers. All four were also first team all-Patriot League selections for a Lehigh team (41-12) that has tied its own school and Patriot League records for wins in a season.

Already a four-time All-League selection, Wieder enjoyed a career season at the plate, as she earns All-Region honors for the first time. The Emmaus, Pa. native enters NCAA regional play with a .346 batting average, a school record-tying seven home runs and a league best 38 runs batted in. Her 14 career home runs rank second in school history. Behind the plate the team tri-captain has thrown out nearly a third of would-be base stealers, while handling the top statistical pitching staff in the Patriot League.

Following a stellar freshman campaign in which she was named the Patriot League’s Rookie of the Year, Kate Marvel’s sophomore season has been equally impressive. The two-time All-League selection is batting .363 and leads the league in both triples and stolen bases. Marvel also ranks among the national leaders in three-baggers and ranks second in the Patriot League with 57 base hits.

Lisa Sweeney’s All-Region selection is the latest in a long line of accolades for the freshman right hander. The Patriot League’s Pitcher of the Year, Sweeney has established school and league single season records for wins (26) and strikeouts (213). The Lumberton, N.J. native led the Patriot League in almost every major pitching category. Sweeney boasts a miniscule 0.89 earned run average and has tossed nine shutouts, including a perfect game versus Army in the Patriot League tournament and a no-hitter against Maine in early March.

The Patriot League’s leading hitter, Julie Sterrett earned second team All-Region recognition, establishing career high’s with a .373 average, six homers and 37 RBI. Sterrett hit a league-best .403 in Patriot League games and also led the league with 60 base hits. Her 37 RBI were one behind Wieder for the league lead. Sterrett was twice named Patriot League Player of the Week and was one of five Mountain Hawks to earn first team All-League recognition.

Next up for the Mountain Hawks and their four All-Region selections is the NCAA regional in Amherst, Massachusetts. Lehigh will face No. 13 Texas A&M Friday at 2:30 pm in the second game of the regional. Host UMass will battle Albany in game one at noon.
