Wieder, Sweeney tabbed for PL weekly awards

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh’s Patriot League record 44 game regular season winning streak may have come to an end, but after taking three of four games from Holy Cross and four of six overall, a pair of Mountain Hawks were recognized as the league handed out its weekly softball awards Monday afternoon. Senior catcher Mary Wieder was named the league’s Player of the Week for the first time this season, while freshman pitcher Lisa Sweeney received Pitcher of the Week accolades for the fourth time this season.

In six games played between April 11-16, Wieder hit .476 (10-of-21) with a home run and seven runs batted in. Four of her 10 hits were doubles, and Wieder also scored three runs. The Emmaus, Pa. native drove in three runs in Lehigh’s 9-0 win over Marist on Wednesday. In four games versus Holy Cross, Wieder drilled seven hits in 14 at-bats, including three doubles, and her career-high sixth home run of the year.

Wieder currently leads the Patriot League with 32 RBI and 73 total bases. She ranks second in home runs, slugging percentage, and runs scored and is tied for third in the league with 11 doubles.

Sweeney made five appearances in the circle for the Brown and White, posting a 4-0 record with a no-decision. The Lumberton, N.J. native struck out ten batters in five innings in Lehigh’s win over Marist Wednesday afternoon. She earned the win in both of Lehigh’s victories over Holy Cross on Saturday, with a three-hit, three-run, 12 strikeout performance in game one, followed by four and two-third innings of scoreless relief in the nightcap.

On the season, Sweeney is an astounding 19-3 with an earned run average of 1.00. Her 19 victories are one shy of the Lehigh single season record set by Emily Ling in 2005. Sweeney has won her last 15 decisions as well as 15 straight starts. Her 152 strikeouts currently rank fifth on Lehigh’s single season list. Sweeney currently leads the Patriot League in ERA, wins, strikeouts and opponents batting average.

The Mountain Hawks (28-10) return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Rider for a mid-week doubleheader. First pitch for game one is set for 3:00 from Lawrenceville, N.J.
