Lehigh hosts Bucknell in league home opener

Lehigh opens up the home portion of its 2006 Patriot League schedule this weekend as the Mountain Hawks welcome the Bucknell Bison to Kaufman Field for a four-game series. The Brown and White collected their 20th win of the season on Thursday with a 2-1 win over Princeton. The win snapped a five-game losing streak against the Tigers and gave Lehigh its fifth straight win overall.

The Mountain Hawks came from behind in their win against Princeton, after getting outstanding efforts from freshman Lisa Sweeney and senior Kate Arico in the pitching circle. The duo combined to yield a run on five hits while striking out eight batters. Sweeney earned her 13th win of the season, while Arico notched save No. 2 with three scoreless innings of relief. Junior Julie Sterrett picked up her 20th RBI of the year with a fourth inning triple, then scored the go-ahead run on a Megan Conrad squeeze bunt.

After last weekend’s four game sweep of Lafayette, Lehigh now stands at 4-0 in Patriot League play and the Mountain Hawks have now won 38 straight regular season league games in a row, dating back to April, 2004. Sterrett had an excellent start to league play, going 7-for-12 against Lafayette with two home runs and nine RBI. Sweeney and Arico each picked up two wins in the pitcher’s circle.

The Bison split their first league series with Colgate 2-2 last weekend in Lewisburg. Bucknell is 8-20 overall after finishing fourth in the league a year ago. The Bison actually defeated Lehigh 6-1 in game two of last year’s Patriot League Tournament, a loss the Mountain Hawks avenged later that day by a 10-5 score. Bucknell is led by senior first baseman Lauren Wible, the 2005 Patriot League Player of the Year, who led the nation in hitting last season.

Lehigh swept a four game series in Lewisburg last April, en route to the Mountain Hawks seventh straight Patriot League regular season championship. The Mountain Hawks and Bison will play two games on Saturday, getting underway at 1:00 pm from Kaufman Field. On Sunday, Lehigh and Bucknell will play two more games, with game one set for a noon start. Sunday’s doubleheader will be broadcast live online at lehighsports.com with streaming provided by Yahoo! Sports.
