BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh freshman pitcher Lisa Sweeney earned another honor on Tuesday, as she was named the ECAC Division I Pitcher of the Week, just one day after earning her second Pitcher of the Week award from the Patriot League. Sweeney went 4-0 last week, and allowed just three earned runs and notched 21 strikeouts to lead the Mountain Hawks to wins in four of six games.
The Lumberton, N.J. native tossed a three-hit shutout, her fourth of the season, in an 8-0 win over Iona on Saturday. In that game she struck out 10 batters, and the first nine outs she recorded in the circle all came via the strikeout. The 10 strikeouts also gave Sweeney four double-digit strikeout games on the season.
Also last week, Sweeney picked up complete game wins over Delaware and Albany, and also came out of the bullpen to throw a scoreless inning of relief to earn the win in a 4-3 eight inning victory over Iona.
In her first year at Lehigh, Sweeney currently leads the Patriot League in eight statistical categories, including wins, ERA, strikeouts, shutouts and opposing batting average. The right hander is currently 10-3 with a 1.01 ERA. Opposing batters are hitting just .137 against Sweeney, who has fanned 83 hitters in 69.1 innings of work.
Sweeney and her Mountain Hawk teammates return to the diamond on Saturday when Lehigh opens up Patriot League play with a doubleheader against rival Lafayette. First pitch in game one is set for 12:00 pm from Metzgar Field in Easton.
