BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Following a week in which Lehigh opened its season with a 7-3 record at the Rebel Spring Games, freshman Lisa Sweeney was recognized Monday as the Patriot League’s Pitcher of the Week. Sweeney appeared in six games, posting a 3-2 record with a 1.19 ERA for the Mountain Hawks and tossed a no-hitter against Maine in just her third collegiate start.
The Lumberton, N.J. native opened the week in Florida with a six and one third inning effort where she allowed no runs and just one hit while striking out six in the Mountain Hawks season-opening win over Robert Morris.
Three days later, Sweeney came out of the bullpen and faced one batter, inducing a double-play ground ball as she earned a save in Lehigh’s win over UMKC. Later that same day, Sweeney held Maine without a hit as the Brown and White defeated Maine 1-0 in eight innings. Sweeney struck out 12 Black Bears and yielded just two walks and a hit batsman as she hurled the first no-hitter for Lehigh, since current teammate Kate Arico no-hit George Mason in March, 2004.
So far this season, Sweeney has allowed just five earned runs in six appearances and has amassed 43 strikeouts, including three double-digit strikeout games. Opponents are hitting just .127 against the right hander this season.
Sweeney and her Mountain Hawk teammates return to the diamond on Friday as they travel to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware to defend their title at the Bash at the Beach, hosted by Delaware State. Lehigh will open up against Rutgers at 9:00 am on Friday, then will face Stony Brook at 3:00 pm.
