Bethlehem, PA – The Patriot League announced its first weekly softball awards of the new season and the Mountain Hawks made it a clean sweep following their performance at the NFCA Leadoff Classic over the weekend. Sophomore Katherine Wegert was honored as Player of the Week, senior Emily Ling was named Pitcher of the Week and outfielder Kate Marvel was recognized as Rookie of the Week.
Wegert garnered Player of the Week honors after batting .364 in Lehigh’s four Leadoff Classic games. The Winnetka, Illinois native was the only Mountain Hawk to hit safely in all four games of the tournament and is the early season team leader in batting average.
Ling pitched effectively in three of the Mountain Hawks four games en route to a 2-1 record and Pitcher of the Week honors. After taking the loss in the Brown and White’s season opener against Florida State, Ling bounced back pitching two scoreless innings of relief to earn the win in Lehigh’s 1-0, eight inning triumph over Michigan State. Ling then came right back against Texas State, striking out 12 in a complete game 3-1 victory.
Freshman outfielder Kate Marvel picked up Rookie of the Week honors, highlighted by a three hit performance against Michigan State.
Lehigh captured the championship in the Bronze bracket at the Leadoff Classic after posting a 2-2 record in the tournament. The Mountain Hawks head to Kissimmee, Florida this weekend to take part in the Rebel Games. Lehigh will open up play with a pair of games Sunday morning as the Mountain Hawks will face La Salle at 8:50 and then take on Penn at 10:40.
