Lehigh eliminated from PL Tournament

Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh’s story book season closed with an upsetting final chapter as the squad was eliminated from the 2003 Patriot League Tournament. Lehigh opened the day’s festivities with a 5-1 win over Army, before falling 5-0 and 3-1 to Colgate and Army respectively. Following the day’s action, Lehigh concludes its 2003 season 39-10 overall, 19-1 in the Patriot League. In the early game, Lehigh jumped out to a 1-0 lead, before eventually pulling away to win 5-1. Jenny Bender picked up the record-setting win to improve to 13-4 on the season. Army starter Ashlie Christian took the loss, dropping the hurler to 12-10. Offensively for the Mountain Hawks, Shana Treon posted a 3-for-4 morning, including a double and a run scored. Edoho Awaih managed a two hit performance, going 2-for-4, with a run scored. Also adding hits for Lehigh were Stephanie Digneo, Jenny Bender, Jessica Young, Mary Wieder, and Kelly Kliewer. Young’s hit was a triple that drove in two runs, while Wieder and Bender each posted an RBI. Army’s Lisa Huntington was the squad’s lone offensive threat, going 1-for-3 with a solo home run. Also posting hits for the Black Knights were Abbie Gottschall and Jamie Gjurgevich. Lehigh’s second game was not as favorable as its first. The Mountain Hawks were shutout for the second time this season by Colgate and Patriot League Rookie of the Year Kate Howard. Howard tossed a complete game six-hitter, while teammates Natalie Rawson and Dorothy Donaldson posted two hits each. Donaldson knocked in two runs, as did Amanda Brickell, while Melissa Rawson joined sister Natalie as the only two Raiders to score two runs. For Lehigh, Emily Ling suffered the loss. Ling struck out six batters, however she allowed five runs, three of which were earned. Erin Hengemuhle went 3-for-3 and Jenny Bender posted a 2-for-3 afternoon. Stephanie Digneo also added a hit, however Lehigh got only one runner as far as third base. Facing elimination, Lehigh returned to action immediately, and fell to Army. The score was knotted at 0-0 heading into the top of the seventh inning, when the Black Knights posted a three-spot. Jamie Gjurgevich went 2-for-3 with a run score, while six other Army batters managed a hit, including a key double by Nicole Luvera. The Luvera two-bagger plated two runs. Emily Ling was again the hard-luck loser, falling to 17-5 on the season. Ling pitched four perfect innings and struck out ten. Lehigh’s Elizabeth Gripp managed a 2-for-2 afternoon, including a walk. Also for Lehigh, Edoho Awaih, Stephanie Digneo, and Kelly Kliewer posted hits. Xochitl Mota scored the Mountain Hawks lone run as she pinch ran for Kliewer in the seventh inning. Lehigh concludes the season at 39-10, setting numerous Patriot League records along the way. Army and Colgate will face off the in the title game(s) tomorrow.
