Young homers as Lehigh wins two

Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh took a pair of games from La Salle Tuesday afternoon to move to 25-6 on the season. With the two losses, La Salle falls to 9-19. Lehigh upended the Explorers in game one 2-0. The Mountain Hawks scored a run in the fourth inning and one in the sixth for their seventh consecutive victory. In the Lehigh fourth inning, Xochitl Mota scored on a Kelly Kliewer single, while back-to-back triples from Stephanie Digneo and Jenny Bender aided in the Mountain Hawks second run. The Bender triple scored Digneo. Bender and Digneo each went 2-for-3, while Shana Treon also went 2-for-3, including her fifth triple of the season. Also adding hits for Lehigh was Erin Hengemuhle and Jessica Young. Freshman pitcher Kate Arico went the distance; allowing just two hits, while picking up her first win of the season. Arico induced ten groundouts, including six back to herself, while striking out five batters. Alexis Schneider and Jeanette Middlestead managed the lone hits for La Salle, while starting pitcher Ali Wood threw a complete game, striking out two Lehigh batters. Scoring (Game 1)

La Salle quickly answered, posting three runs in the top of the third. The big blow was a two RBI single from Kathleen Hennessay. Game one’s winning pitcher, Kate Arico, got Lehigh on the board in the fourth inning with an RBI single. The single scored Kelly Kliewer who earlier reached on a single. The Mountain Hawks would score no further runs, as Shana Treon grounded out with two outs, stranding Xochitl Mota and Arico. In the Lehigh fifth inning, the Mountain Hawks took the lead once more as Jessica Young launched her second homerun of the season. The bomb was good for two RBI as Jenny Bender walked earlier in the inning. Lehigh would manage no further offensive output in the fifth, but would go into the dugout leading 5-4. Emily Ling picked up the win in relief to improve to 12-2 on the season. Offensively for Lehigh, Kliewer went 2-for-3, while Treon and Young knocked in two runs each. Also adding hits for Lehigh was Edoho Awaih, Jenny Bender, Britt Swanson, and Kate Arico. "La Salle comes from the Atlantic 10 and it’s a real strong conference," noted head coach Fran Troyan. "They have played a lot of tough opponents and we knew we’d have our hands full. We were fortunate to get some tough play from Katie Arico and Jessica Young today. Jess’s homerun was a huge turning point in game two." Lehigh returns to action tomorrow for another non-league doubleheader, this time vs. Princeton. Game time is 3:00 p.m. Scoring (Game 2)
