Blacksburg, VA – Lehigh dropped a pair of games at the Hokie Round Robin Tournament on Saturday, losing to the host school, Virginia Tech, in the day’s first game and then Youngstown State in the second game. The Mountain Hawks now stand at 8-5 on the season. Lehigh took an early 1-0 in the second inning against the Hokies, when freshman Erin Hengemuhle clubbed the first home run of her college career off of Virginia Tech’s Katie Maynard. The Mountain Hawks tried to keep the rally going, as sophomore leftfielder Britt Swanson walked. Maynard would settle down, striking out both junior centerfielder Edoho Awaih and freshman catcher Caroline Blount to retire the side. The score remained that way until the Hokies put a four spot on the board in the bottom of the fourth against sophomore pitcher Emily Ling. Shortstop Carmen Farmer started the rally with a solo shot to lead off the inning. After a pair of singles, rightfielder Kelly Brown tripled in a pair of runs. Other than the Hengemuhle homer and a pair of base hits by Swanson, Lehigh could not figure out Maynard, who allowed only the one run and three hits on the afternoon. Sophomore Emily Ling lost for the first time all year, surrendering seven runs on 13 hits over six innings of work. Scoring

Already leading 1-0, the Penguins jumped on senior pitcher Jenny Bender in the third and fourth, tagging the Lehigh hurler for six more runs. Zetta Dumkrieger cracked a two run homer in the third, and Amber Smith led off the following inning with a home run of her own. The Mountain Hawks tried to fight their way back into the game in the top of the fifth, when freshman leftfielder Mary Weider hit her first collegiate home run. Then in the top of the sixth, after Awaih and Ali Linsk reached on errors, a single off the bat of sophomore Jessica Young plated Awaih. Senior shortstop Steph Digneo would clear the bases with her first home run of the season to cut the lead to 8-5. Youngstown State then turned to Jen Hartman to close out the game, and the Penguin reliever set down the next six Mountain Hawks to finish the game. Wieder had the Lehigh’s only multi-hit game, going 2-3 with a home run. Digneo’s two-run homer and Jessica Young’s RBI single were the Mountain Hawks only other hits on the afternoon. Bender took the loss, falling to 3-3 on the season, after allowing seven runs over three-plus innings. Danielle Resovich pitched the final three innings, giving up the Penguins final run. Lehigh looks to get back into the win column tomorrow, when the Mountain Hawks face Hartford in their final game at the Hokie Round Robin Tournament. Scoring
