Altamonte Springs, FL – Lehigh concluded its 2003 Rebel Spring Games trip with a 7-2 record following Friday’s two game sweep of Robert Morris and Butler. The Mountain Hawks defeated Robert Morris 3-2 in nine innings, while Butler fell 8-1 to Lehigh. Lehigh played yet another extra inning affair, this time with cross-state foe Robert Morris. The Mountain Hawks and Colonials battled in a classic pitchers dual, as neither team was able to score until the seventh inning. Robert Morris got on the board first, scoring a run off of a Nicole Holby single. Mountain Hawks’ starting pitcher Jenny Bender managed the shut down the Colonials push for a second run as she induced a groundout to end the inning. In the Lehigh seventh, Stephanie Digneo led off with a double and was eventually driven home by an Erin Hengemuhle triple. Lehigh was unable to score any further runs as Robert Morris pitcher Brandi Papiernik shut down the Mountain Hawks attack. Each team went scoreless in the eighth inning, however, Robert Morris was quick to score a run in the ninth as Brandi Doerschner was placed on second base and was then driven home by Maggie Pope on a groundout. The Colonials would then be held in check by Lehigh’s Emily Ling, giving the Mountain Hawks a chance to win the game. In the Lehigh ninth Shana Treon was placed as second base and immediately scored as Jessica Young reached on an error. With the score tied 2-2; Young stole second then advanced to third on a Digneo single. Jenny Bender earned an intentional walk, loading the bases for Mary Wieder. Wieder played the role of hero, singling to right field, scoring Young and winning the game for the Mountain Hawks. Offensively, Digneo went 2-for-4, while five other Mountain Hawks earned one hit each. In game two the Mountain Hawks scored early and often as pitcher Emily Ling notched her second win of the day. Lehigh jumped out to a 3-0 lead before Butler could get on the scoreboard. The Bulldogs managed only one run, scoring it in the bottom of the fourth inning. The final Lehigh barrage came in the top half of the seventh as the Mountain Hawks posted three runs and batted around the order. Statistically, Shana Treon and Jessica Young each picked up three hits and scored two runs, while Jenny Bender knocked in two runs and went 1-for-4 at the plate. Six other Mountain Hawks notched a hit en route to Lehigh’s 13 hit output. Butler managed only three hits, with Jess Stevenson driving home the lone Bulldog run. The Mountain Hawks next scheduled game will be Wednesday at Fairfield. Game one of the doubleheader is slated to get underway at 2:00 p.m. For a complete box score from these games, hit the back button on your browser and select the "Most Recent Box Score" link from the right-hand column of the main softball page.
