Lehigh opens season with a win, Troyan gets No. 200

Altamonte Springs, FL – Lehigh opened its 2003 season with a 10-2, five inning win over Niagara. The win also marked the 200th career victory for head coach Fran Troyan. With the win the Mountain Hawks move to 1-0, while the Eagles fall to 0-1. The game was scoreless after one inning; however, the Mountain Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second as Mary Wieder scored on and error by Colleen Larsen. In the bottom of the third inning Elizabeth Gripp smoked a three-run homerun to left field, giving the Mountain Hawks a 4-1 lead. Lehigh would go on to score one more run in the inning and add five more over the next two to close out the Eagles. Statistically for Lehigh, Jessica Young led the way at the plate, going 3-for-3 with three runs scored. Gripp and teammate Jenny Bender each managed three RBI, with Bender going the distance on the mound, allowing seven hits and two earned runs. For Niagara, pitcher Ashleigh Barber went 1-for-2 at the plate with a run scored and RBI, while pitching four innings, allowing eight hits and eight runs, seven of which were earned. Game two of the afternoon vs. George Mason was rained out. The Mountain Hawks return to action Monday afternoon vs. Indiana-Ft. Wayne and Providence.
