Allentown, PA - Lehigh's softball team finished second in the prestigious Carole Weil Tournament, falling to Temple Sunday in the finals 2-0. The Mountain Hawks managed a 4-2 record throughout the tournament, picking up wins over Robert Morris, Fordham, LaSalle, and Cabrini. Along with the Temple loss, Lehigh also dropped a game to Seton Hall.
Lehigh picked up its first hit in the fifth inning as senior Jenny Bender singled to lead off the inning. Freshman Mary Wieder also picked up a fifth inning single for the Mountain Hawks, however, Temple pitcher Liz Naughton picked up two key strikeouts to end the inning. Lehigh would again mount a rally, this time in the top of the sixth inning, as freshman Erin Hengemuhle doubled. The hit would turn out to be the last for Lehigh in the contest, as Naughton shut down the Brown and White to pick up the win and the tournament title.
"She (Naughton) is a very good pitcher, and you're not going to get a lot of opportunities against her," said head coach Fran Troyan. "We didn't make the most of the chances we had and they made some nice plays," added Troyan. "We learned a lot about ourselves this fall and what we need to work on."
Lehigh opens it season on March 1, 2003 as the squad opens the regular season at the Temple Tournament.
