Sweeney wins two-of-three awards as LU sweeps

Sweeney has been a force both at the plate and in the pitcher’s circle this season. Last week she went 4-0 with a 1.00 earned run average in five appearances, and struck out 54 of the 102 batters she faced. The Lumberton, N.J. native tossed her second one-hit shutout of the year in a 1-0, eight inning win over Valparaiso last Tuesday, and matched her season and career high with a 16 strikeout performance the following day in Lehigh’s 2-1 win over Western Carolina. On Friday, Sweeney came out of the bullpen in the fourth inning, and struck out 11 of the 12 batters she faced to earn the win in Lehigh’s 13-7 triumph over IPFW. Equally impressive in the first three months of the season has been Sweeney’s performance at the plate. In eight games last week Sweeney hit .455 (10-for-22) to raise her league leading average to .528. Sweeney scored seven runs and drove in five, including the go-ahead RBI single in a win against La Salle, and her second home run of the season, which accounted for Lehigh’s lone run in a loss to
Sweeney currently boasts the top batting average and ERA (0.64) in the Patriot League and currently leads the league in most offensive and pitching categories. Offensively Sweeney tops the league in hits (19), runs (14), doubles (five) as well as total bases, walks, slugging and on base percentage. Her 11 RBI ranks second to teammate Alex Cueva. Sweeney has started ballgames in left field and as the designated player when not starting in the circle.
In the circle, Sweeney boasts a 7-0 record and has fanned 86 batters in just four innings of work. In addition to ERA, Sweeney leads the league in wins, strikeouts, innings pitched, shutouts and opponents batting average.
