Lehigh and first place Lafayette meet Saturday

Lehigh welcomes the Patriot League’s hottest team to Stabler Arena on Saturday evening as the Mountain Hawks meet archrival Lafayette. The Brown and White has won its last two games, including a come-from-behind 63-60 victory over Colgate on Wednesday at home. Freshman Prentice Small led the way with 19 points, 17 coming in the second half, while sophomore Zahir Carrington notched his first career double-double with 18 points and ten rebounds. Following an 80-68 win over Bucknell at home on Wednesday, Lafayette has won five straight, including all four of its league games to surge to the top of the Patriot League standings. The Leopards have done their work from outside all season long, sinking nearly 11 three-pointers per game, and that was again the case versus the Bison as Lafayette drilled 14 trifectas, led by Andrew Brown’s seven.

While Lehigh must deal with Lafayette’s rapid-fire three-point attack, the Leopards will be facing one of the top frontcourts in the Patriot League in Bryan White and Zahir Carrington. In their last seven games, the Mountain Hawks starting forwards are averaging a combined 26.5 points, 12.0 rebounds and 2.8 blocks. In that time, White or Carrington has led Lehigh in scoring three times, in rebounds five times and in blocks seven times.

The comeback wins over Army and Colgate were due in large part to the Mountain Hawks defensive effort in the second half. Lehigh held the two teams to 31 percent shooting (20-65) and a total of 53 points (26.5 per) in the second halves. The 21 points scored by Army were the fewest by a Lehigh opponent in the second half since last season’s overtime win at Colgate.

Lehigh pays tribute to longtime public address announcer Bill McCoach along with the 1988 East Coast Conference Championship team on Saturday evening. McCoach has not missed a single LU hoops game (men or women) for 20 straight seasons. The 1987-88 squad was just the second in school history to earn an NCAA Tournament berth, as the Brown and White finished the season with a school record 21 wins and faced Temple in the postseason. Members of the team included: Greg Berliner, Chris Block, Bruce Beder, Erick Bronner, Leon Caldwell, Bill Cheslock, Scott Layer, Tom Martin, Charles Olayinka, Mike O’Hara, Mike Polaha, Daren Queenan, Derek Rogers, Pete Rudman and Tim Rusell.
