BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh football program held its annual postseason banquet on Saturday, February 16 at Iacocca Hall on Lehigh’s Mountaintop Campus to look back at the 2007 season and honor members of that team. Over 300 players, parents, alumni, friends, coaches and support staff were on hand for the event.
Several Lehigh program awards were handed out for individual accomplishments from the 2007 season, in addition to the recognizing of certain players and coaches who received awards from national agencies.
Senior Pete Donchez took home the program’s highest honor as he received the Scholar-Athlete award. Given to the student-athlete who best combines success in both academics and athletics, Donchez boasts a 3.69 grade point average as a finance major, and was one of only two football student-athletes in the entire Patriot League to register a perfect 4.0 GPA in the 2007 fall semester. On the field, Donchez hauled in 17 passes this past season for 222 yards, averaging 13.1 yards per catch.
Junior linebacker Anthony Tim Diamond was the recipient of the Archibald Johnston Cup, given to the most valuable player in the Lehigh program. An honorable mention All-America selection and an All-Patriot League first team honoree, Diamond led Lehigh with 107 tackles this season, marking the first time since 2004 that a Mountain Hawk registered 100 or more tackles.
Senior center John Reese earned the James P. McConologue Award given to the player that is "all football." A two time captain and three time All-Patriot League selection, Reese was honored by two outlets as an All-American this season, as he helped to anchor a Mountain Hawks offensive line that allowed the fewest number of sacks in the Patriot League.
Senior offensive lineman Jimmy Kehs was named the Alexander G. Hahalis award winner as the team’s best lineman, offensive or defensive. Kehs concluded his career with a second straight All-League selection, as he started nearly every single game he was healthy for over the course of the past three seasons.
The Barry Fetterman award, given to the player or players who best exemplify loyalty, dedication, and unselfishness was awarded to senior tight end Joe Sutherland. Sutherland had a breakout senior campaign for the Brown and White, as he recorded nine receptions for 110 yards, including the first touchdown catch of his career.
Senior safety Ernest Moore received the John C. Whitehead “Big LU” award given to the player that combines leadership and performance. A captain, Moore was the unquestioned leader of the Mountain Hawks defense this season as he garnered his second straight All-League nod after registering 60 total tackles, third most on the team.
The annual Lehigh football banquet was made possible by the Lehigh Athletics Partnership program, whose mission is to promote interest in Lehigh Athletics, to encourage and provide financial support to the program and to enhance relations with all former participants, fans, friends, and parents of Lehigh student-athletes.
