Lehigh win streak snapped by Seawolves

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh saw its three game win streak come to an end on Monday evening as the Mountain Hawks fell to Stony Brook 71-52 at Stabler Arena. Three Seawolves hit for double figures led by Bryan Dougher who hit six three pointers en route to 18 points, while sophomore John Adams led Lehigh with 13 points on the evening. With the loss the Mountain Hawks fall to .500 at 3-3 while the visitors improve to 5-1.
“I thought Stony Brook came out with more intensity and was more aggressive than we were at the start tonight,” Lehigh head coach Brett Reed said afterwards. “Once we were able to match their intensity the game was mostly even for the remainder but it’s hard to come out like we did against a very good team and have success.” He continued, “We gave Stony Brook too many good looks from beyond the three-point line and we were not able to match their effort inside. Underneath the basket the game is one of will and effort and they (Stony Brook) had the upper-hand in that matchup tonight.”
After a torrid start to the game Stony Brook cooled off and finished with a 40% shooting clip for the evening. Joining Dougher in double figures for Stony Brook was Dallis Joyner with 14 and Muhammad El-Amin with 10. Tommy Brenton pulled down a game-high ten boards and Brenton and Dougher handed out five assists apiece. The Seawolves scored 18 second chance points to Lehigh’s six and outscored the Brown and White 18-10 inside the paint.
Lehigh, which started three freshmen, shot just 30% for the game and was out rebounded 44-34 on the night. Rob Keefer led the Mountain Hawks with five rebounds while Prentice Small was the team leader in assists with four. Lehigh’s bench once again outscored the opposition, 25-21, marking the sixth straight game in which the Mountain Hawk reserves totaled more points than the opposition.
Stony Brook hit a three-pointer on its opening possession which set the tone for the first half in which the Seawolves scored 47 points en route to a 47-24 lead at intermission. With Lehigh leading 8-7 with 16:08 on the first half clock Dougher drilled the first of his five first-half three-pointers to put the visitors in front 10-8. SBU then ran off six more points to move in front 16-8. A Dallis Joyner lay-up with 11:10 left before halftime gave Stony Brook a ten-point cushion and from there the visitors reeled off 13 straight to surge in front 34-11 with 7:59 left before halftime.
Three-pointers by John Adams and Buchberger along with another bucket by Buchberger brought Lehigh within 14 points with 3:38 on the clock but the Seawolves scored 11 of the next 13 points to take a 23-point cushion into the locker room. Lehigh shot only 29% in the first 20 minutes with Buchberger, Greiner and Hall each scoring five points. The Mountain Hawks turned the ball over six times and hit five three-pointers in the half, each from a different player.
Stony Brook shot a sizzling 50% in the half, and sank seven three-pointers including five by Dougher on his way to 15 first half tallies. The Seawolves out rebounded the Mountain Hawks 26-12 and outscored them 13-0 on second chance points with Brenton pulling down a team best six boards. Joyner added nine points and Brenton led the visitors with five assists.
The Seawolves maintained a lead of at least 20 points for the majority of the second half with Lehigh cutting it to a 19-point game on a jumper by Greiner with 9:47 on the clock. Two free throws by Keefer made the score 61-43 in favor of SBU with 5:55 to go but that was as close as the Mountain Hawks would get until Adams hit his third three pointer of the evening with less than one minute to play.
Lehigh returns to action on Thursday evening when the Mountain Hawks travel to New York to take on the Columbia Lions. Tip-off is set for 7:00 and all of the action will be broadcast live on ESPN Radio 1230 and 1320 as well as Lehighsports.com with veteran Matt Kerr providing the commentary. Pre-game coverage gets underway at 6:30 PM.
