BETHLEHEM, Pa. – For the second time this season, Lehigh relied on a great defensive effort in the first half, holding Colgate to just nine points, to win decisively 51-39 Wednesday night at Stabler Arena.  Alex Ross scored a game high 16 points, knocking down four three-pointers, to lead the Mountain Hawks offense.  Haly Crites added seven rebounds and two blocks on the defensive end.  The win keeps Lehigh tied atop the Patriot League standings, with an 8-3 league record and 16-10 overall.  Colgate falls to 1-25 (0-11).

“I was very happy with the way we played in the first half,” said head coach Sue Troyan, “but things kind of fell apart at the end.  This game gave us a chance to get some different players in, but more importantly we got a chance to rest other players.  I’m looking forward to the game Saturday [against Lafayette].  I feel we’re playing a lot better right now, than when we faced them the first time.”

Lehigh jumped out to a commanding lead to start the game, scoring the first 11 straight points, holding the Raiders scoreless for the first 11:16.  The Brown and White continued to pressure the Colgate offense all half, holding the Raiders to just nine points.  Lehigh capitalized on great three-point shooting, hitting four-of-nine shots, led by Ross with two.  Courtney Dentler and Erica Prosser each added a three.

The Mountain Hawks shot 39.1 percent from the floor and held the Raiders to 13 percent shooting, including one-of-10 from three-point range.  Lehigh out-rebounded Colgate 19-17, with Crites grabbing a team high six.

The Mountain Hawks began the second half the same as the first, scoring on a quick lay-up by Melissa Rich and a three-pointer from Ross to increase their lead to 30-9.  Lehigh added another three-pointer from Ross and a lay-up from Dentler to get its largest lead of the game, 38-14 with 15:54 remaining.

Colgate slowly chipped away at the Lehigh lead, but the Mountain Hawks defense was just too intense, forcing 15 steals and 22 turnovers.  Prosser had a team high five steals, and Claire Sullivan had another three.

Dentler tied her career high with nine points and Prosser also chipped in with nine points, shooting four-of-eight from the field.

Sami Kozlowski scored a team high 10 points for Colgate and Caitlin Gillard added nine points and four rebounds.

The Mountain Hawks return to action on Saturday for their final home game of the regular season, against Lafayette, at 7 p.m..  The game can be seen live on Service Electric 2 Sports (dial position 50) with Jeff Tourial and Steve Lomangino.  The game can also be heard live in the Lehigh Valley on ESPN Radio 1230 and 1320 AM and around the world on Lehighsports.com, with streaming provided by Yahoo!
