Lehigh drops first two games of the season

PHILADELPHIA-The Mountain Hawks opened the 2007 season in Philadelphia at the Temple Classic on Friday with a pair of games, as Lehigh squared off against Youngstown State and host Temple. The Brown and White dropped the first match to
Senior Shannon Spafford led the way offensively, recording ten kills in 21 attempts, and adding three digs on defense. Freshman Dannielle Pimental put forth the best defensive effort, recording two blocks and four digs in her first collegiate game. Overall, the team recorded 38 kills and five service aces over the course of the three games.
“For our first match of the year our offense executed very well,” said first year head coach Jenny Maurer. “I was very pleased with the ball control. We fought hard and played at an even level.”
Against Temple Shannon Spafford had another outstanding game for the Brown and White, as she recorded a team high five kills and five digs in the match. However, the Owls proved to be too powerful up front, blocking eight shots and also recording 12 service aces, including five from Ariel Pierre.
“The score of the first half of the game wasn’t indicative of how we played,” said Maurer. “Early on we were controlling it, but we just couldn’t pull away.”
“I was really impressed by the way we were playing in the third game”, added Maurer. “They still had all their starters in and we only lost by three points. Despite the two losses we walked away with our heads high. I felt like we improved every game and I am very happy with the way we played.”
