PHILADELPHIA-The Mountain Hawks opened the 2007 season in Philadelphia at the Temple Classic on Friday with a pair of games, as Lehigh squared off against Youngstown State and host Temple.  The Brown and White dropped the first match to Youngstown State, 3-0, with the game scores, 30-24, 30-24, and 30-23.  It was the first loss of the season for Lehigh, while the Penguins improved their record to 2-0.  In the second game, host Temple handed Lehigh their second 3-0 loss of the night.  The game scores were 30-15, 30-21, and 30-27.

Senior Shannon Spafford led the way offensively, recording ten kills in 21 attempts, and adding three digs on defense.  Freshman Dannielle Pimental put forth the best defensive effort, recording two blocks and four digs in her first collegiate game.  Overall, the team recorded 38 kills and five service aces over the course of the three games.

“For our first match of the year our offense executed very well,” said first year head coach Jenny Maurer.  “I was very pleased with the ball control.  We fought hard and played at an even level.”

Youngstown State was led by Jessica Fraley, who had a game high 17 kills and three blocks.  As a team the Penguins converted on 40.2 percent of their kill attempts, for a total of 60 in the match.

Against Temple Shannon Spafford had another outstanding game for the Brown and White, as she recorded a team high five kills and five digs in the match.  However, the Owls proved to be too powerful up front, blocking eight shots and also recording 12 service aces, including five from Ariel Pierre.

“The score of the first half of the game wasn’t indicative of how we played,” said Maurer.  “Early on we were controlling it, but we just couldn’t pull away.”

“I was really impressed by the way we were playing in the third game”, added Maurer.  “They still had all their starters in and we only lost by three points.  Despite the two losses we walked away with our heads high.  I felt like we improved every game and I am very happy with the way we played.”

The Mountain Hawks return to action tomorrow as they play their final two games of the Temple Classic.  They will face Akron in the first game at 3:00 PM and will then take on La Salle at 5:00 PM.u
