BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh opened up its final homestand of the regular season by sweeping a doubleheader from Monmouth Wednesday afternoon at Kaufman Field. Senior Mendy Martin’s three run home run capped off a five run third inning as Lehigh took the opener 5-2, and junior Megan Conrad went 3-for-3 with three runs batted in as the Mountain Hawks took the nightcap 9-1 in five innings. With the sweep, Lehigh improves to 26-15-1, while Monmouth falls to 23-10.

All five of Lehigh’s runs came in the third inning of game one. Senior Heather Hamasaki gave Lehigh a 1-0 lead as she singled home junior Kate Marvel. A walk to senior Lauren Haney put runners on first and second, and after a flyout, Martin hit a long home run to left centerfield, her first of the season, to make it 4-0 Mountain Hawks. Senior Whitney Schenbeck kept the inning alive with a single, and a double down the left field line from sophomore Lisa Sweeney plated Schenbeck with the fifth and final run.

Sweeney was effective in the circle, allowing just two runs on five hits in seven innings, while striking out five as she improves to 14-4 on the season.

Haney drew a pair of walks in the opener giving her 61 for career, which sets a new school record for bases on balls.

In game two, freshman Tiffany Curtis worked out of a no-out bases loaded jam in the second inning without allowing a run, before Lehigh loaded the bases and scored three runs in the bottom of the frame.

Lehigh scored its first run on a fielders choice from junior Kate Marvel, as Lee Simonetti’s throw home from second base pulled Lisa DiLeo off of home plate, allowing sophomore Kristyn Kubiak to score. A bases loaded walk to Conrad made it 2-0, and then Hamasaki followed with an RBI single to give Lehigh a 3-0.

The Mountain Hawks scored five more in the third to take control of the game. Marvel drove in Martin with an RBI single, and then Conrad followed with a two-run double to make it 6-0 Lehigh. Hamasaki then delivered her third RBI single of the day and eventually scored on an error by Dawn Gilchrist.

A sacrifice fly from Hanley in the fourth gave Lehigh its ninth and final run. Monmouth answered back with a run in the fifth, but after Curtis retired the side, the game was called due to the eight run rule.

Curtis improved to 9-7 on the year, allowing just a run on three hits while striking out two.

The Mountain Hawks will return to action on Saturday, when they host Holy Cross in a four game series. Saturday’s doubleheader gets underway at noon from Kaufman Field and will be preceded by senior recognition festivities.
