COLUMBUS, Ga. – Lehigh opened its 2007 on Friday with a pair of losses on the opening day of the NFCA Leadoff Classic at the South Commons Complex. The Mountain Hawks were shut out 8-0 in five innings by No. 18 Georgia, before falling victim to a perfect game from Virginia Tech All-American Angela Tincher in a 4-0 setback to the Hokies, who are unranked, but receiving votes in the latest polls. The Mountain Hawks mustered just one hit in the two games combined, as their season opens with an 0-2 record.

In the opener against the Bulldogs, Lehigh had at least one base runner in every inning, but the Mountain Hawks were unable to capitalize. Junior Megan Conrad delivered the Mountain Hawks only hit, a third inning single.

Georgia starter Kate Gaskill walked four and struck out six in two and one third innings of work, before giving way to ace Kasi Carroll, who improved to 8-1 with two and two third scoreless innings, allowing just two walks while striking out four.

The Bulldogs (10-4) scored three unearned runs in the third inning and added four runs on five hits in the fourth. Georgia right fielder Charvi Green was 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and a pair of runs scored.

Sophomore Lisa Sweeney (0-1) went the first four innings in the circle, giving up seven runs, but only four earned runs on nine hits. Sweeney also issued three walks and failed to record a strikeout.

In the nightcap Tincher, a second team All-American last year, was dominant, registering 16 strikeouts while retiring all 21 batters she faced. The perfect game was just the second in Leadoff Classic history.

Caroline Stolle supplied plenty of offense for Tincher, slamming a pair of home runs; a solo shot in the second inning and a two-run blast in the fourth. Erin Ota added an RBI single off of Lehigh freshman Tiffany Curtis, who went the distance allowing four runs on eight hits, while striking out three and walking three in her collegiate debut. Virginia Tech improved to 8-3 with the victory.

The Mountain Hawks will continue pool play at the NFCA Leadoff Classic with games against Coastal Carolina and Illinois State on Saturday afternoon. Lehigh will square off against the Chanticleers at 1:00 pm before facing the Redbirds at 3:30.
