Lehigh takes fifth and sixth at PL Championships

EASTON, Pa. – The cross country teams competed at the Patriot League Championships Saturday afternoon at Lafayette’s Metzgar Fields.  Shannon Alejandro had the best finish for both squads crossing the finish line in 21:16, for third place overall.  Alejandro was also named to the first team All-Patriot League.  Jon Wetzel led the men’s team taking 20th, with a time of 26:52.  The men’s team finished fifth place with 121 points.  The women’s team had 139 points and took sixth place.

 

Despite not having any runners finish above 20th, the men’s team was able to put together a strong finish, placing five of its seven runners between 20th and 30th.  Wetzel took the top spot for Lehigh for his second consecutive race.  Just three-tenths of a second behind him was fellow junior Ben Lampi.  Rounding out the men’s runners were Dan McClimon (24th, 27:03), Dan DeWitt (28th, 27:12), Kenny Burgess (30th, 27:13), Steve Sample (39th, 27:31) and Carl Leuing (40th, 27:36).

 

Alejandro made it five straight top finishes for the Mountain Hawks and was just four seconds behind second place finisher Cathleen Ford of American.  Freshman Alexis Weiner put in another strong performance, finishing the race in 22:16 in 20th place and the third best time among all freshmen.  Other Lehigh finishers were Dana Stellar (39th, 22:57), Katie McClernand (46th, 23:08), Andrea Mascaro (49th, 23:11), Jen Curran (51st, 23:12) and Hana Baskin (59th, 23:31).

 

The American men took the team title, with the Eagles’ Brendan Fennell taking first place overall.  Fennell finished the 8K race in 25:00 with teammate Stephen Hallinan taking second at 25:21.  Army’s John Mickowski was third with a time of 25:35.  Navy took second place and finished just one point behind American for the top spot.  Army was in third place with 78 points with Bucknell in fourth with 95 points.  Rounding out the men’s side was Colgate, Lafayette and Holy Cross.

 

Bucknell and Navy tied for first place in the women’s race, each ending up with 58 points.  The Bison had three runners in the top ten led by Erin Crammer-Hart in sixth place.  Amy Watson paced the Navy runners in fifth place, just three seconds ahead of Crammer-Hart.  Colgate freshman Stacey Marion finished first overall with a time of 20:53, 19 seconds ahead of Ford.  The Raiders were third overall with 67 points followed by American in fourth with 114 points.  Army finished 11 points ahead of Lehigh for fifth place, while Holy Cross was just one point behind the Mountain Hawks.  Lafayette finished in eighth place with 230 points.

 

The Brown and White return to the course in two weeks when it hosts the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals on November 10 on Lehigh’s Goodman Campus.
