BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Days after sweeping Saturday's dual meet against Loyola (Md.), both Lehigh men's and women's cross country teams had student-athletes win this week's Patriot League weekly awards. Senior Michael Mitchell and sophomore Madison Zaun were appointed the Patriot League Cross Country Athletes of the Week.
Both runners were key parts in this past weekend's wins over the Greyhounds. The women's team registered the top seven runners, leading to a 15-50 victory in the 5K showdown. On the men's side, Lehigh had the top four finishers and nine of the top 10 runners, as the Brown and White topped Loyola (Md.) 16-47.
In the races, Zaun broke away from teammate Jamie Zamrin with three laps to go to prevail the winner of the race, while Mitchell jolted past the Lehigh pack of Connor Melko, Nick Norton and Brad DeMassa with nine laps remaining, cruising to an individual win.
"It was great to see Michael run so well and pick up the win on Saturday," said head men's coach Todd Etters. "He is a true workhorse and he has prepared extremely well over the past year to be in this position. I look forward to seeing him compete in the future, now that he has the confidence of a win under his belt."
Mitchell's 5K time was 14:36.
"It was awesomet to see Maddie return to competition and she actually ran her 5K PR," expressed head women's coach Debbie Utesch, "She worked really well with her teammate Jamie Zamrin to set the competitive consistency for the race. I'm especially grateful that she had the opportunity to see the result of all her hard work training primarily independently over the past year."
The sophomore Zaun's 5K time was 17:45.
You can catch both runners and their teams competing again this weekend, as Lehigh is scheduled to compete against Lafayette in Easton.
