BETHLEHEM, Pa. – In its two home games during the month of December, Lehigh has scored 70 or more points in each as the Mountain Hawks opened the tenth annual Christmas City Classic with a 74-61 win over the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs on Friday night at Stabler Arena.  Lehigh’s previous 70-point home game was a 70-49 victory over Binghamton on December 7.  The Mountain Hawks shot a season-high 56.9 percent from the floor en route to scoring their most points of the season.

“I thought we shot the ball well tonight and we are beginning to see the offense come around,” said head coach Sue Troyan.  “The team is getting confident in taking and making shots and that is what is going to make us a powerful team.”

Four of Lehigh’s starters reached double-digits, with seniors Sara Ellis and Adrienne Blount, sophomore Melissa Rich and freshman Alex Ross all hitting double-figures.  Ellis led the Brown and White with a game-high 18 points, while Blount recorded her third double-double of the season by tallying 12 points and 12 rebounds.  Rich also netted 12 for Lehigh.

Ross proved to be the hot shooter for Lehigh as the Columbia, Tenn. native was 5-for-6 on the night, not missing her first shot until 7:14 remained in the second half.  Ross had the game’s first five points by sinking a pair of free throws and a three-pointer.  She would finish out the first half shooting a perfect 4-for-4 from the field, 2-for-2 from three point range and 2-for-2 from the free throw line.

“It was a great game,” said Ross.  “The entire team was shooting well and I think I just fed off of that.  I was just putting up my shots and they were going in.”

Gardner-Webb reeled off five early points to tie the game at 5-5 at the 17:05 mark of the first half, but that would be the closest the Bulldogs would get to Lehigh as the Mountain Hawks scored seven straight points to carry a 12-5 lead at the 15:41 mark.  Lehigh continued to increase its first half lead, eventually holding a 19-point lead with 2:11 left.  The Mountain Hawks would go on to shoot 62.5 percent from the field as Lehigh carried a 40-28 lead at the half.

The Bulldogs continued to cut into their deficit in the second half and eventually cut the gap down to seven points as Lehigh led 48-41 at 13:31, but the Mountain Hawks continued with their hot shooting to keep the game out of reach.  Lehigh would go on to shoot 51.9 percent in the second half.

Candyse Kelly went 7-for-13 from the field and 3-for-4 from the free throw line to lead the Bulldogs with 17 points.  Jenny Sprouse, who was 4-for-5 from beyond the arc, tallied 14 points while Meranda Burnett chipped in 12 points.

Earlier in the day, Seton Hall defeated Central Michigan 79-55 to send the Pirates (8-3, 1-0 Big East) into the championship game of the Christmas City Classic.  Seton Hall’s Heta Korpivaara tallied a game-high 16 points, while teammates Ela Mukosiej and Noteisha Womack had 15 and 13 points, respectively.  Latisha Luckett had a team-high nine points off the bench for Central Michigan.

“Seton Hall is an athletic team,” said Troyan.  “They moved the ball up and down the court quickly tonight.  We’re going to have to control the tempo of the game and play strong defense against them.”

Lehigh returns to action on Saturday night in the championship game of the Christmas City Classic at 7:30 p.m. when the Mountain Hawks will face Seton Hall, while Gardner Webb will take on Central Michigan in the consolation game at 5:00 pm.  Live audio of Lehigh’s game will be broadcast locally in the Lehigh Valley on WLVR-FM (91.3) as well as worldwide online at lehighsports.com, with streaming provided by Yahoo!
