Lehigh falls to Quinnipiac in Connecticut

“With Jay (Mgebroff) in early foul trouble and unable to play for virtually the entire first half, they took it to us underneath early,” said head coach Billy Taylor afterwards. “We have to cut down on our silly mistakes, like turnovers and fouls, and in order to become a championship caliber team we have to learn how to win on the road, on someone else’s court.”
The Mountain Hawks struggled right from the start, hitting on only 37.5 percent in the opening half, and went into halftime trailing by two, 32-30. Olivero and Neptune led Lehigh with seven points each while White added six. The Mountain Hawks shot just two free throws in the opening 20 minutes, while the Bobcats hit only one of their six attempts at the charity stripe. Crafton and Anderson led Quinnipiac with six points apiece, with Crafton hitting two shots from beyond the three-point arc. The home team shot 43.3 percent in the opening half and out rebounded Lehigh 23-15.
Quinnipiac would extend to a nine-point lead with 14:39 remaining in the second as the Bobcats jumped ahead 45-36 on a three by Chris Wehye. After a jumper by freshman Matt Shamis and a three from Olivero, Lehigh was down just four with 12:26 to go. With 9:28 remaining, Olivero was fouled on a jumper, and sank the ensuing free throw to make it a three-point ballgame at 50-47. Lehigh would get to within two with 4:49 to go when Olivero hit yet another jumper.
