“Bucknell played really well tonight,” said head coach Dean Koski. “They did a great job at pressuring us throughout the game. I thought both teams had some good looks.”
Koski continue, “Tom Zubulake did a nice job at shifting the momentum with his play and long throws. It was important for us to get that first goal and the second one was much needed as well.”
After a scoreless first half, both the Mountain Hawks and the Bison had their chances to get on the scoreboards. Lehigh came close in the 70th minute when Zubulake launched one of his many throw-ins towards the goal. Bucknell goalkeeper Joey Kuterbach caught the ball and went into the net, but kept the ball from crossing the goal line.
The Mountain Hawks got another chance a couple minutes later when Zubulake launched another throw towards the goal. Senior Joe Verdi jumped up and headed the ball into the net, giving Lehigh a 1-0 lead in the 75th minute. Lehigh would go on to seal the victory in the 85th minute when sophomore Jim Taranto fed the ball from the top of the box to sophomore Patrick Starsinic, who in turn found junior Joe Clemente. With Kuterbach coming out to challenge, Clemente scored as his shot went to the far corner.
Senior Jim Morahan came up big for Lehigh, breaking up multiple Bucknell passes. Morahan recorded two saves in the shutout, including a crucial save late in the second half. With a shot from Nathan LaGrave heading towards the far post, Morahan made a diving stop and deflected away from the goal.
Both teams recorded four corner kicks as Lehigh outshot Bucknell 20-7.
