No. 18 Mountain Hawks extend streak with 4-0 win

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – In what has already been a record-breaking season, the No. 18 Mountain Hawks did a little more rewriting of the record book on Wednesday night in their 4-0 victory over the Philadelphia University Rams at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Lehigh, 12-1-1 overall and 5-0 in the Patriot League, pushed its record-breaking unbeaten streak to a 12th game, while tying its single season shutout record of 11 that was set in 2004. Additionally, senior Jim Morahan tied the single season shutout mark of 10 that Sam Bishop set in 2003.

“Whenever you break a record, it is always a milestone for the program and individual,” said head coach Dean Koski. “Right now, our ultimate focus is with what we accomplish in the league. However, I am very pleased and proud of the team.”

Continues Koski, “I had a little anxiety coming into this game. “Philadelphia had the potential to beat us. The match had all the classic makings of a let down game with the victory over Bucknell on Saturday night and the three upcoming games. But I have to credit the guys for not letting that happen.”

The Mountain Hawks first got on the scoreboard in the 14th minute when junior Patrick Starsinic scored his first of two goals. Freshman Jesse Schram crossed the ball to Starsinic, who then shot the ball to the top right corner. Schram would go on to give Lehigh a 2-0 lead in the 25th minute as junior Joe Clemente dribbled down towards the endline and found sophomore Jim Taranto lurking in the box. Taranto back heeled the ball to Schram, who scored his fourth goal of the season. The Mountain Hawks finished the first half scoring just like they started it—a Starsinic goal to the top right corner.

In the second half, Taranto scored his seventh goal in the Brown and White as he got around Philadelphia University’s goalkeeper Charles Custer and shot the ball into the empty net.

Lehigh held the Rams to just four shots—only two of which were on goal. Morahan recorded two critical saves in the second half. Freshman Chris Varga came into the game in the 76th minute and had no saves.

The Mountain Hawks return to action on Saturday night when they travel to Hamilton, N.Y. to face the Colgate Raiders. Game time is set for 7:00 pm.
