BRONX, N.Y. – Lehigh traveled to the prestigious Iona Meet of Champions on Saturday morning, held in Van Cortlandt Park, and the Mountain Hawks more than held their own versus some of the top cross country programs both in the region and the entire nation.  Both Mountain Hawk genders posted top-ten finishes, as the men came in sixth (181 points), defeating the likes of Albany, Army, and Pittsburgh, all regionally ranked teams, and the Lehigh women (285 points) raced their way to a ninth place finish, running past Patriot League power Army, as well as Big-12 member Texas.

The top Lehigh finisher in the women’s race was senior Andrea Luebbe, who placed 22nd, defeating runners from national powers such as Princeton and La Salle, while senior Rob Hampson led the Mountain Hawk men, coming in 23rd place, finishing before runners from 11-time national champion Arkansas, as well as nationally ranked Iona College.

Luebbe finished in a time of 22:47.6, and was closely followed by teammate Sarah Seiler in 25th place, with a time of 22:51.6.  The remaining Mountain Hawk women were junior Carolyn House (67), freshman Shannon Alejandro (83), freshman Jen Fliliberto (88), freshman Katie McClernand (90) and senior captain Tracie Fails (109).

For the men, Hampson crossed the finish line in a time of 25:32.3, while junior Sean Swift came in 29th with a time of 25:45.8.  Other Lehigh finishers were junior Victor Vientos (34), junior Brendan Glover (37), junior Steve Rosinski (58), senior Dave Merola (70) and senior Tyler Spencer (80).

The women’s race was won by Lindsey Scherf of Harvard with a time of 21:19.3, and the Big Red of Cornell won the team championship, with 67 points.  Arkansas was the overall men’s champion, scoring 20 points, while Richard Kiplagat of Iona was the individual champion, finishing in a time of 23:54.4.

Lehigh returns to action on Saturday, October 1, when the Mountain Hawks host the annual Paul Short Run.  The first race is scheduled to begin at 10:00 AM.  An in-depth preview will be available on lehighsports.com early in the week.
