Mountain Hawks sweep doubleheader from Rider

Things started well for the Brown and White in game one as they scored seven runs in the first four innings in game one. Jess Young drove in runs in the first and the fourth innings with RBI singles, while Mendy Martin cleared the bases in the third with a three-run triple. Julie Sterrett also contributed a two run single as Lehigh led 7-1 after four.
The Broncs would rally in the sixth turning several Lehigh miscues into four runs off of Lehigh starter Stefanie Forlenza. Kate Arico came on to stop the bleeding and the Mountain Hawks would tack on four more in the bottom of the sixth on RBI singles from Lauren Haney and Martin and a two run single from Whitney Schenbeck. Forlenza was credited with her sixth win while Arico notched her first save of the season. Schenbeck finished the game 3-for-3, while Young also delivered three hits.
In game two the Mountain Hawks spotted Rider an early 2-0 lead before Martin put the Mountain Hawks back in front. After Sterrett drove home Lehigh’s first run with a double, the sophomore shortstop drilled a Jessica Holland offering over the left field fence for a two run home run, her first of the season, to give Lehigh a 3-2 lead.
After Rider tied the game in the top of the fifth, the Mountain Hawks stormed back with three runs in the bottom of the frame, on RBI singles from Sterrett, Britt Swanson and Martin. Kate Arico went the first five innings in the circle to notch the win and improve to 6-2 on the year. Heather Hamasaki got the final six outs for her second save.
“Today we had the opportunity to let a lot of players play and get some good at bats,” said head coach Fran Troyan. “We have a lot of excellent players and it just proves that everyone on this team is a bona fide player.”
The Mountain Hawks return to action on Saturday as they will wrap up the Patriot League season with a four game series against Army. The teams will play doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday, with the first pitch for Saturday’s twinbill set for 1:00. Lehigh has already clinched a share of the Patriot League regular season outright and needs just one win to capture the crown outright.
