Mountain Hawks complete sweep of Crusaders

4/10/2005 12:00:00 AM | Softball

Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh completed a four-game sweep of Holy Cross on Sunday afternoon at Kaufman Field, as the Mountain Hawks used solid pitching in the first game to come away with a 1-0 victory, and strong hitting to win 8-3 in the nightcap. With the two victories, Lehigh now sits at 26-6 on the season and a perfect 12-0 in Patriot League play, while the Crusaders fall to 7-16 overall and 3-9 in the league.

In the first game, neither team was able to generate much offense as the pitchers for each side for very effective.  In the circle for the Mountain Hawks was Heather Hamasaki who threw five innings of shut out softball, before giving way to senior Emily Ling, who worked the final two innings and struck out our batters.  Despite the solid pitching though, Lehigh’s bats were silent until the bottom of the seventh inning when Jess Young led the inning off with an infield single.  Stephanie Palmieri then reached on an error, sending Young to second base.

Mary Weider was up next and her sacrifice bunt advanced both runners up one base each.  With two outs and the pressure mounting, Whitney Schenbeck came to the plate and delivered a game-winning RBI single to centerfield, giving the Mountain Hawks the victory.

In game two, Lehigh jumped all over the Crusaders right from the start as Kate Marvel led off with a single and stolen base in the first inning and then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Katharine Weggert.  Taryn Hanley then singled Marvel in and following a double by Kelly Kliewer and a single by Weider, the Mountain Hawks were in front 2-0.

Lehigh went right back to work in the second inning as Lauren Haney led off with a single.  With one on and one out, Marvel continued her hot hitting, sending a ball deep into the right –center gap, which resulted in a double and two runners on with just one out.  Taryn Hanley was next up and her infield hit resulted in a run and a 3-0 Mountain Hawk lead.  Kliewer then doubled, which scored Marvel and the Brown and White was in business with a 4-0 lead.

Lehigh would add single runs in the third and fourth innings and two more in the fifth to take an 8-1 lead heading into the seventh inning, where Stefanie Forlenza took over for Ling, who started the game, and the Mountain Hawks were on their way to victory number 12 in the league.  Ling did not allow any hits in her three innings of work, while Forlenza allowed just three hits in four innings of work.

Lehigh returns to action on Tuesday evening when the Mountain Hawks take on Villanova in Allentown from Patriots Park.  Game one of the doubleheader will get underway at 3:00 and all of the action can be seen live on Service Electric 2 Sports and heard live on lehighsports.com beginning at 3:00.
