Lehigh takes pair from Philly schools in Florida

Kissimmee, FL – Playing its first games in over a week the Mountain Hawks headed south to Florida and came away with a pair of victories over Philadelphia schools Sunday morning at the Rebel Games. In its opening game Lehigh scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to edge La Salle 3-1; then in the second game the Mountain Hawks handled Penn 5-2. The two wins improve Lehigh’s mark to 4-2 on the season, while both the Explorers and Quakers fell in their season openers.

 

In the first game Lehigh and La Salle were deadlocked at one apiece headed to the seventh inning. Lehigh loaded the bases in the top of the seventh, then senior Kelly Kliewer drilled a single scoring Jess Young and Mary Wieder to give the Mountain Hawks a 3-1 lead. Kate Arico shut down the Explorers in the bottom of the seventh to gain her first win, giving up one run on four hits and recording one strikeout. Arico improves to 1-1 on the year with the complete-game win.

 

The second game saw Lehigh take a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning as Young scored on a passed ball and then Kliewer delivered another RBI single, scoring Wieder. After Penn tied the score in the top of the fifth, Lauren Haney delivered a run-scoring single in the bottom half of the inning. The Mountain Hawks tacked on two more in the sixth as Young drove in a run with a double and then Wieder brought her home with a single. Wieder was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in the win. Heather Hamasaki got the win for Lehigh, giving up two runs on five hits in five and a third innings of work. Emily Ling got the final five outs to record her first save.

 

Lehigh will continue play at the Rebel Games on Monday. The Mountain Hawks will face Penn at 2:20 then will take on Toledo at 6:00 from the Osceola Sports Complex.
