Columbus, GA –
Emily Ling pitched seven innings, striking out 12 and allowing only one earned run, while sophomore
Julie Sterrett slammed a two-run homerun as Lehigh won its second consecutive game at the NFCA Leadoff Classic on Saturday afternoon, defeating Texas State 3-1.
With the victory, Lehigh improves to 2-2 on the season, while the Bobcats fall to 5-14 in 2005.
Mary Wieder had a double for the Mountain Hawks, who collected just five hits on the day, with Kate Marvel, Mendy Martin and Katharine Wegert also collecting hits along the way. Texas State jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when Heather Ackley homered to left field, giving the Bobcats their lone run of the day.
The Mountain Hawk bats were silent for most of the afternoon, until the fifth inning when Wieder started the rally with her double. Lauren Haney then bunted Wieder over to third base and Kelly Kliewer came to the dish. A Texas State error allowed Kliewer to reach first base and Wieder to score the game tying run. Sterrett then came up and blasted her home run to right field, yielding two runs, one of which was unearned, and the Brown and White was in front 3-1.
The final line for the Mountain Hawks read as follows: three runs, five hits and no errors, while the Bobcast had one run, five hits and the one error, which proved to be costly.
Lehigh returns to action on Sunday morning, as the Mountain Hawks take on Nebraska, a team they met in last year’s NCAA Tournament in Lincoln. The first pitch is scheduled for 11:00 am.
