BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh senior captain Jenny Callan established a career high with 25 points and tied a school record with 21 rebounds as the Mountain Hawks snapped a three game losing skid with a 75-59 victory over Virginia Commonwealth Sunday afternoon at Stabler Arena. Three Mountain Hawks scored in double figures and Lehigh held an overwhelming 51-21 rebounding advantage as the Brown and White improve to 3-6 on the season. VCU falls to 4-3 with the loss.

“This win feels good because we haven’t played as well as we know we’re capable of playing lately,” said Callan. “I just tried to do my part to help us get that ‘W’.”

The Mountain Hawks struggled with turnovers in the first half, while defensively Lehigh allowed the Rams to shoot 48 percent from the field. Callan kept Lehigh in the game with 10 points and 10 boards in the first half, her fourth consecutive double-double and fifth in the last six games. The Mountain Hawks were down by as many as seven in the opening half and went into the locker room trailing 32-28.

Lehigh got things rolling in the second half, as the Mountain Hawks clawed their way back. The Mountain Hawks took the lead for good with under five minutes remaining on a Callan jumper, which was part of a 17-0 run in which Lehigh blew the game open. In that stretch, the senior co-captain converted two lay-ups, a jumper and a three-point play to put the Brown and White ahead for good. Callan’s 21 boards tied a school record set by Anne Tierney versus Navy in 2001.

“What more can you say about Jenny,” noted head coach Sue Troyan. “We really needed this win and she was determined to make sure we got it.”

Freshman guard Tricia Smith also had a career day with 12 points, seven assists and five rebounds. Junior Sara Ellis added 19 points including a perfect eight-for-eight from the free throw line. The Mountain Hawks shot 45 percent from the field on the afternoon.

Michele Cosel led VCU with 15 points. The Rams shot 41 percent from the field and just five of 22 from beyond the three point arc.

The Mountain Hawks will now have some time off for final exams and will return to the court on Thursday, December 29 when Lehigh hosts the Christmas City Classic at Stabler Arena. The Mountain Hawks will host Fairfield in the second semifinal at 7:30, which follows the first semifinal between New Hampshire and Towson.
