Schappert qualifies for NCAAs as Lehigh hosts regional

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh hosted the 2005 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Saturday on the Goodman Campus. Mountain Hawks junior Jen Schappert made history, finishing in seventh place in the women’s 6K race, good enough to qualify for the NCAA Championships; the first time Lehigh has qualified a runner for nationals, since the NCAA adopted its current regional qualifying format.

Both Mountain Hawk teams posted impressive top ten finishes on Saturday. Schappert helped led the Mountain Hawk women to an eighth place finish, as she navigated the course in a time of 20:44.9 to finish seventh overall and earn All-Region honors. Senior Andrea Luebbe posted Lehigh’s next best finish, coming in 51st with a time of 22:02.6. Other Lehigh finishers included freshman Shannon Alejandro (61st), juniors Sarah Seiler (62nd) and Carolyn House (87th). Freshmen Katie McClernand (100) and Jen Filiberto (114) rounded out the Mountain Hawk scoring.

The Lehigh men also posted a strong showing, finishing in a tie for eighth with Penn State. Junior Brendan Glover was the Mountain Hawks top male finisher, coming in with a time of 31:13.8 in the 10K race, good enough for 25th and a spot on the All-Region team. Juniors Sean Swift and Victor Vientos were next for Lehigh, finishing 36th and 43rd respectively. Other Lehigh scorers were senior Rob Hampson (60th), junior Steve Rosinski (92nd), senior Dave Merola (108th) and freshman Dan Dewitt (122nd).

For both races the top two teams qualified for the NCAA Championships, plus the top four individuals who are not members of the qualifying teams.

Georgetown won the team competition on the men’s side, placing five runners in the top 25. Hoyas senior Fleet Hower won the men’s 10K in 30:03.8. American placed second to Georgetown, while individual qualifiers were La Salle’s Sean Quigley, Penn’s Courtney Jaworski and Frank Macreery and Dave Nightingale of Princeton.

On the women’s side Princeton placed first led by Cack Ferrell who finished the race in 19:58.3. Villanova earned the second team qualification spot. Individual qualifiers were Keira Carlstrom of American, Rachel Papin of La Salle, Maggie Infeld of Georgetown and Schappert.

Schappert and the rest of Saturday’s qualifiers will go on to the NCAA Championships, which are set for Terre Haute, Indiana on Monday, November 21.
