BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Following a week off, Lehigh returns to action on Saturday afternoon to take on the Crusaders of Holy Cross in a pivotal Patriot League showdown.  With both teams sitting at 1-0 in league play, the winner will have an inside track towards securing a berth in next month’s Patriot League Tournament.  The Mountain Hawks (5-7, 1-0) were last in action on September 30 when they defeated archrival Lafayette 1-0 in Easton on the strength of senior Marissa Iannarone’s game-winning goal and reigning Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week Meghan Gove’s seven save shut out effort.  Holy Cross enters this weekend’s contest with a record of 5-6 overall and 1-0 in league action.

Lehigh is in the midst of a four-game road trip and Saturday’s contest will be its eighth away from home in its last nine.  The Mountain Hawks are led on offense by seniors Iannarone, Mary Beth Kuenne and Maureen Harrington.  Iannarone is first on the Mountain Hawks and fourth in the Patriot League with 17 points, which includes five goals and seven assists.  Kuenne, who is tied for fourth in the league with 30 shots, has also scored five goals, while Harrington has chipped in with three goals and one assist thus far.

Kelsey Smith (one goal, five points), Christy Smith (one goal, three points), Jen Schmeltzle (1 goal) and Melissa Fricke (1 goal) have also found the back of the cage on occasion this season.

On defense, Gove leads the league with two shut outs, and has recorded six games of double digit saves, including a career-high of 18 at Brown in mid-September.  In front of Gove, senior captain Mel Lepko, and sophomores Lauren Volpe and Stacy Somerfield combine with Kuenne to form the backbone of the Brown and White defense.

The Crusaders are fresh off of a 2-0 loss to No. 16 Boston College on Sunday afternoon in Worcester.   They are led by Jenna Cook (9 goals, 9 assists, 27 points), Tara Welch (7 goals, 3 assists, 17 points) and Laura Cohen (6 goals, 2 assists, 14 points) on offense.  Susie Whelan has also contributed six assists along the way.

In the cage for Holy Cross, Sony Kuhn has started all 11 contests, recording 63 saves and a 2.13 goals against average.

Saturday’s game is scheduled to begin at noon in Worcester, and should Lehigh prevail, it would be the Mountain Hawks first victory over Holy Cross since earning a 2-1 victory in overtime at home in 1996.
