Mountain Hawks too much for Crusaders in DH sweep

4/17/2004 12:00:00 AM | Softball

Worcester, MA – Lehigh continued to roll in Patriot League play, as the Mountain Hawks swept Holy Cross in a league doubleheader at Freshman Field on Saturday afternoon.  Game one was a hard-fought affair, with Lehigh outlasting the Crusaders 5 to 3 in 11 innings.  Game two was the more traditional contest Mountain Hawks fans have grown accustomed to, as the Brown and White cruised to a 6-1 victory.  Following the day’s play, Lehigh remains alone atop the Patriot League standings with a 12-2 league mark (32-12-2 overall).  Meanwhile, the Crusaders drop to 9-19 overall and 5-9 against league competition.

In the first game, Heather Hamasaki struck out seven Crusaders over 6.2 innings, but left with a no-decision.  Kate Arico (10-1) kept the Crusaders off the board over the final 4.1 innings to secure the victory.

In that contest, the Mountain Hawks got on the scoreboard after Lauren Haney doubled home Erin Hengemuhle in the top of the fourth.  Lehigh added two more in the sixth as a Liz Gripp infield single and a Kelly Kliewer ground out plated a pair.

Holy Cross rallied to tie the score with two in the bottom of the sixth and one in the seventh to send the contest into extra innings.  Tied 3-3 in the eleventh, the Mountain Hawks finally broke the deadlock.  Lehigh got back-to-back doubles from Mendy Martin and Shana Treon with two outs to regain the lead, and eventually, earn the victory.

In the second game, Arico got the start, and made the most of it.  The sophomore scattered eight hits and struck out four over six innings to earn her second victory of the afternoon, improving her record to 11-1 on the season.

Lehigh used a balanced offensive attack to roll to the game two victory.  Right fielder Shana Treon continued to wallop the ball at a torrid pace.  Treon was 3-for-4 in game two with a double and an RBI.  Whitney Schenbeck and Jessica Young each collected two hits for Lehigh, and designated hitter Julie Sterrett drove in two with a single up the middle in the seventh inning.

The Mountain Hawks and Crusaders meet for another twinbill on Sunday in Worcester.  Game one’s first pitch is scheduled for Noon.
