Mountain Hawks split with Villanova

Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh split a non-league doubleheader on Thursday afternoon with Villanova, beating the Wildcats 3-0 in the first game before falling 3-1 in eight innings in the second. Both games saw great pitching performances from both teams, as each struggled to score runs in very windy conditions at Kaufman Field.
In the first game, Heather Hamasaki (7-7) recorded her third complete-game shutout of the season, scattering five hits over seven innings while striking out two. She also helped her own cause offensively, driving in a run with a base hit in the sixth inning. Mary Wieder led the charge offensively, connecting for her second home run of the season (and the first Mountain Hawk round-tripper of the season at Kaufman) to lead off the bottom of the sixth.
The Mountain Hawks got their first run of the game in the third, as pinch runner Katherine Wegert scored from third on a fielder’s choice by Whitney Schenbeck.
In the second game, Lehigh again got out to an early lead, as Kelly Kliewer’s two-out double in the second plated Erin Hengemuhle, giving the Mountain Hawks the 1-0 lead.
But Villanova would rally, scoring a run in the top of the fourth without the benefit of a hit. Ricci Lugo reached on an error by shortstop Mendy Martin, then moved to second on a walk to Karri Koller. The game would remain tied into the eighth, when Villanova scored on a passed ball by Mary Wieder, followed by an RBI single by Lugo to make the score 3-1.
Emily Ling (12-4) took the loss for Lehigh, despite giving up just one earned run and six hits in eight innings of work and striking out five.
