Lehigh holds off late Army rallies for DH sweep

In the first game, the Lehigh bats were quiet until the fifth, when Shana Treon connected for Lehigh’s first home run of the season, a two-run shot off the foul pole in left. Army played the ball off the bounce, and appeared to throw out Treon coming into third, but an appeal by Lehigh coach Fran Troyan brought the umpires in for a conference, where they promptly ruled the shot a round tripper. Catcher Mary Wieder would add a home run blast of her own in the 6th.
After Lehigh scored again in the top of the seventh to make it 4-1, Army began to show the form that won them the first two games of the series. The Black Knights manufactured two runs to close the gap to 4-3 off starter Emily Ling (8-2), which brought out Heather Hamasaki to close it out. Hamasaki did the job, earning her third save of the season after getting the last two outs to preserve the victory.
In the second game, Lehigh jumped out early with three runs in the first and one in the fourth, staking Kate Arico (7-1) to a 4-0 lead. After Army plated a run in the sixth, it appeared to be déjà vu as Army again went to the bottom of the seventh trailing 4-1, and things once again got interesting. Nikki Posey blasted a two-run shot to left, making the score 4-3, but Arico held her ground and struck out Nicole Luvera to end the game and get the win.
Mary Wieder was the offensive star on the day, going a combined 7-8 in the two games with a HR, two doubles, and four RBIs. She said getting the wins were very important to the team.
“We are the returning regular season champs,” said Wieder on the radio postgame show, “and people expect us to win. After we lost yesterday, we had to come back strong and show who we really are, so we came in extra focused today.”
