Mountain Hawks discuss upcoming playoff appearance

Lehigh will play its first postseason football game in three years on Saturday afternoon when the Mountain Hawks host James Madison in a NCAA Division I-AA first round game at Goodman Stadium. Lehigh held its weekly media luncheon on Wednesday afternoon, as head coach Pete Lembo, quarterback Mark Borda and wide receiver Adam Kovacs discussed the Mountain Hawks upcoming clash with the Dukes.

Head Coach Pete Lembo

On getting into the playoffs:

“We’re very thankful to have the opportunity to keep going. Watching the TV show with this group of guys on Sunday afternoon and seeing their eyes light up was special. The fact that we’ll be playing at home this week was very satisfying, looking at the year we had and the adversity we had to overcome.”

On stopping the Dukes on Saturday:

“It will take a tremendous physical effort. There will be no room for error from an assignment standpoint. You can get away with some things against a bottom level Patriot League team, and still win. You can’t get away with those things against a top Patriot League team or a top team from the Atlantic 10. We will not need just a tremendous physical effort, but a mental focus as well. Our guys will have to be in the right place at the right time, all the time.”

Senior Wide Receiver Adam Kovacs

On rebounding from Saturday’s loss:

“We’ve been an excellent team all year, but on Saturday we found out that as good as we are, we can’t have two or three turnovers and beat a good team. I’m proud of what the seniors have accomplished these last four years. I’m thankful to have this opportunity this weekend to redeem ourselves.”

Junior Quarterback Mark Borda

On getting into the playoffs:

“Sunday morning we were thankful when we found out we had new life. We appreciate having the opportunity of being one of only 16 teams in Division I-AA that get to play ball this week. We want to take advantage of that and work as hard this week as we ever have before.”

On the playoff atmosphere at Goodman Stadium:

“I remember when Lehigh played Hofstra at home (in 2001). I was there; a lot of my friends were there. It was one of the best events I’ve ever been to. The atmosphere is almost magical. Anything can happen. It’s fantastic for the community. A lot of people will be home for Thanksgiving and they’re thrilled to have a Lehigh home playoff game on Saturday.”

Saturday’s game gets underway at 12:30 from Goodman Stadium in Bethlehem. Tickets can be purchased by calling (610) 7LU-GAME, on-line at lehighsports.com, or at the Goodman Stadium ticket window on game day.
