No. 17 Penn State

Lehigh wins Pennsylvania State Dual Championships

11/14/2004 12:00:00 AM | Men's Wrestling

University Park, PA – Senior Jon Trenge scored a pin 2:15 into his bout with Joel Edwards to give No. 2 Lehigh a 24-15 victory over No.17 Penn State and clinch the inaugural Penn State Dual Championship title for the Mountain Hawks. Trenge’s pin was one of seven Lehigh victories in the dual meet. The Mountain Hawks got two pins and won five decisions against Penn State as they improve to 4-0 this season in dual meets. Penn State is 1-1.

The Nittany Lions struck first as Adam Smith won an 8-3 decision over John Stout. Lehigh would get on the scoreboard at 133 as Jeff Santo earned a hard-fought 5-0 decision over Tim Haas. Cory Cooperman gave the Mountain Hawks the lead with an 8-3 decision over Dewitt Driscoll. It was the first time in four matches this season that Cooperman did not pin his opponent. Penn State would regain the lead when James Woodall scored a pin on Matt Anderson, the first time this year a Mountain Hawk wrestler was pinned. Derek Zinck won a 7-2 decision at 157 and the match was tied at the halfway point.

Troy Letters made his season debut for the Mountain Hawks and was impressive. The defending national champion recorded eight takedowns before pinning Steve Troup in the third period. Penn State’s Eric Bradley defeated Matt Cassidy to bring the Nittany Lions within six points, but Trenge’s victory clinched the championship for the Brown and White.

Troy was a little rusty for about two minutes,” said coach Greg Strobel. “Then he turned it on and really got into a groove.”

“They were all good duals,” said Strobel. “We had some really good wins against Penn State, and the scores against York and UPJ don’t really indicate how competitive those matches were.”

Earlier in the day, Lehigh defeated York 44-3 and blanked Pitt-Johnstown 44-0.

The Mountain Hawks return to action on Thursday night as they welcome No. 6 Michigan to Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. The match gets underway at 7:00.
