Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh’s offense had a big day and the defense continued its strong play as the No. 21 Mountain Hawks defeated the Albany Great Danes 44-14 in front of 6874 fans at Goodman Stadium on Saturday. Sophomore running back Marques Thompson had a career day, scoring three touchdowns. Lehigh’s 44 points were the most it has scored at home since it defeated Georgetown 69-0 in 2002, and its 393 total yards are a new season-high. The win makes coach Pete Lembo the 8th Lehigh coach with 30 wins and brings Lehigh’s record to 3-1 as it head into Patriot League play, while Albany falls to 1-4.

After the ball changed hands several times, Lehigh got its offense in gear as Thompson took a screen pass from Mark Borda and galloped 35 yards for a touchdown and the home team was in front 7-0 at the 8:53 mark of the first quarter.  Following an Albany punt, Lehigh drove 52 yards on eight plays and received a 25-yard field goal from Justin Musiek to put the Mountain Hawks up by a 10-0 count at the 3:45 mark.

Junior Gerran Walker made a successful return to the lineup as he caught a 73-yard touchdown pass from Borda, which was the longest pass in Borda’s young career, and with just over one minute remaining the in the first quarter, Lehigh was in front 17-0.  That is how the game would remain until Eddie Unverzagt punched in a score from the one-yard line and Albany trimmed Lehigh’s lead to ten at 17-7.

The Mountain Hawks then added to their lead as Thompson took another short screen pass from Borda and after making a nifty cut, sprinted ten yards towards the end zone and scored to put the Mountain Hawks up 23-7 with 8:30 remaining in the first half.  Albany pulled out all of its tricks on a 21-yard touchdown run on a reverse by wide receiver Mike Wall.  Wall took the pitch from quarterback Nicholas Bazan and made several Mountain Hawk defenders miss on his way to pay dirt and with just over two minutes remaining in the opening half, Lehigh was in front by only nine at 23-14.

The teams traded three-and-outs to start the second half, but Lehigh started its second possession of the period with great field position.  Thompson scored his third and final touchdown of the game on the second play of the drive, this time on a run of 33-yards. Late in the quarter, Borda injured his right calf as he released a spectacular 36-yard pass to junior wide receiver Kevin Zebluim.

The drive continued into the fourth quarter, and backup quarterback Kyle Keating scored on a 1-yard touchdown run to put Lehigh up 37-14. Only minutes later, senior defensive end Tom Alfsen picked up a Bazan failed lateral attempt and rumbled 74 yards to conclude the scoring.

Lehigh returns to action next Saturday when the Mountain Hawks travel to Worcester, MA to open their 2004 Patriot League schedule versus Holy Cross.  Game time is slated for 1:00.
