Lehigh wins 24th straight at home

Bethlehem, PA – The third ranked Lehigh football team put together a total team effort on Saturday afternoon as they dismantled an obviously overpowered Georgetown team, 69-0. Right from the opening possession, it was apparent that Lehigh was going to run away with this one. Jermaine Pugh scored from eight yards away just four minutes into the game and the Mountain Hawks never looked back. The victory marked Lehigh’s Division I-best 25th consecutive regular season win and the Mountain Hawks' 24th straight triumph at the beautiful Goodman stadium. The 69 point win was Lehigh's largest margin of victory since a 78-0 win over Lafayette in 1917.
With over 9,000 people in attendance the Lehigh squad was clicking on all cylinders, as the defense repeatedly forced Georgetown into either a punt or a turnover. Senior Matt Salvaterra had a very solid game for the Brown and White as he compiled seven tackles, one blocked punt and a fumble recovery. Chad Schwenk, starting at quarterback for the first time this season, got the most out his one half of play as he dissected the Georgetown secondary for 288 yards and four touchdowns. Jermaine Pugh electrified the crowd with 73 yards rushing and three touchdowns, including a spectacular 29-yard run that consisted of several 360-degree spins that left the Georgetown side scratching their heads.
The Lehigh receiving corps was also on top of their game as both Michael Sutton and George Evans tallied over 100-yards receiving. Sutton took a screen pass from Schwenk late in the first quarter and ran away from everyone for a 62-yard touchdown and finished with 108 yards on the day. Later in the half, Evans, who also runs track, showed his break away speed to all in attendance as he caught a pass across the middle and galloped 72 yards for the score, as he finished with 107 yards receiving.
With Lehigh up 49-0 at halftime the only questions that were still left unanswered were how much the Mountain Hawks would win by and the status of senior wide-out Dave Crockett, who was injured on the opening kickoff. Early indications are that Crockett fractured the lower part of his leg, which means that some of Lehigh’s younger receivers will have to mature very fast, which judging by today’s performance should not be a problem.
The second half gave Lehigh coach Pete Lembo a chance to get some of his younger players playing time, and they did not let up on the Hoyas at all. The Mountain Hawks continued to pour it on as Kevin Weschler came in and threw a touchdown pass to Aaron Argenta and Lehigh led 55-0, early in the second half.
Lehigh is off next week, but the team returns to action on September 21, as they play host to Ivy League foe Princeton, on young alumni day. Game time is slated for 1:00, and tickets can be purchased by calling (610) 7LU-GAME.
