Vermont slips past Mountain Hawks

9/15/2003 12:00:00 AM | Men's Basketball

Burlington, VT – Fueled by 26 points and 18 rebounds from senior Trevor Gaines, the Vermont Catamounts (3-3) downed Lehigh (0-6) by a score of 83-75 in front of a crowd of 1,445 at Patrick Gym on Sunday afternoon. Lehigh was led by junior Matt Logie’s 20 points.

The Mountain Hawks jumped out to a 5-2 lead early, before the Catamounts began to shoot the ball well. Each team shot over 50% in the first half (Lehigh 54%, Vermont 57%), and the Mountain Hawks began to have difficulty hanging on to the basketball. UVM took a 49-40 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The second half saw Lehigh continuing to battle hard, keeping the deficit in the 6-7 point neighborhood. In the end, though, Lehigh couldn’t get over the hump. Despite shooting the ball well (53% for the game), the Mountain Hawks were plagued by turnovers (21). The Catamounts shot only 38% in the second half, but were aided by 18 offensive boards on the afternoon. UVM out-rebounded Lehigh 44-31 overall.

"We didn’t do a good job of passing the basketball," head coach Sal Mentesana said following the loss. "We’re a good passing team; I don’t know what happened out there today."

Lehigh returns to action on Wednesday night as the Mountain Hawks wrap up a four-game road trip when they travel to State College to take on the Penn State Nittany Lions. Tip-off is set for 7:30 from the Bryce Jordan Center.
