The Mountain Hawks won the 6th Annual Lehigh Mountain Hawk Classic Saturday night, beating Niagara (2-11) 3-1 to claim the title. Earlier in the day, Lehigh (8-6) also beat Quinnipiac 3-0.
It was a special tournament for the Mountain Hawks, as not only did they win the title, but head coach Patrick Nicholas passed former coach Karen Adams for first place on the all-time wins list in Lehigh history. Nicholas now has 110 wins for his career.
In the final against Niagara, Jeanette Singleton led the way with a tremendous game, totaling 28 kills, a season high, to go along with 14 digs. Freshman Michelle Schwendenmann also put up impressive numbers, hitting a career-high 18 kills. Tournament MVP Rebecca Gawronski had 11 blocks in the game to cap an outstanding tournament as well.
Niagara kept it close for all four games, with all-tournament selection Michelle LeSouder tallying 20 kills in the match. Erin Graham also chipped in with 18 kills.
In the earlier match, Lehigh was led by all-tournament selection Katie Dukatz with 14 kills, with Michelle Schwendenmann recording 12. All-tournament selection Allison Jack had 41 assists. Quinnipiac finished fourth in the tournament, losing all three matches to fall to 2-11.Coach Patrick Nicholas was very impressed with his team’s performance over the course of the tournament. “I thought everyone, especially the underclassmen, really stepped up in Jeanette’s absence for most of the matches,” said Nicholas. “We got great production from our middle blockers, and now we are 6-1 in our last seven contests, so I’m pretty happy.”
Niagara finished the tournament 2-1, good for second place, and put two on the all-tournament team, Valerie Arnone and LeSouder. Providence finished third at 1-2, with Ayana Cadres making the all-tournament team. Quinnipiac finished fourth, with Kalyn Hundley making all-tournament as well.
Lehigh will kick off its Patriot League season Thursday as it travels to Washington, DC, to take on American.
