Lehigh creeps closer, but falls to American

10/14/2003 12:00:00 AM | Volleyball

Washington, DC- Call it a moral victory for the Mountain Hawks, as once again they were able to take a game from Patriot League champs American before falling in their match Thursday night.
Lehigh (8-7, 0-1) won the first game 30-28 as senior Jeanette Singleton played tremendously, striking eight kills.  The Mountain Hawks led for most of the game and were able to finish it off for only the second time against American since they joined the league.

In the second game, American came out firing and looked to run away with the match, winning 30-19. But Lehigh hung tough, fighting until the end and keeping it much closer in the last two games 30-23 and 30-25.

Head coach Patrick Nicholas was happy to see his team’s toughness in the face of adversity. “American (4-8, 1-0) sets the bar,” said Nicholas, “and the rest of us have to try to raise our games to that level.  I thought we were in it for a while, and played really well individually.  But I think the team effort was lacking a bit in the last few games, and it ended up costing us the match.”

Singleton led the way on the night with 18 kills and 10 digs. The Mountain Hawks put up impressive defensive numbers as a whole, with Jill Racketa, Jill Kober, and Allison Jack all reaching double figures. Reigning Patriot League Player of the Year Karla Kucerkova paced American with 18 kills, and Cutrina Biddulph had 17.

Lehigh returns to action on Saturday as they travel to Annapolis to take on Navy.  Game time is set for 7:00.
