Kreider, Steve

Steve Kreider
- Induction:
- 1995
- Class:
- 1979
Steve Kreider came to Lehigh as a freshman quarterback and left recognized as one of the all-time great Engineer wide receivers. He earned All-America honors while helping the team win the NCAA Division II National Championship in 1977, the only national title in the history of the Lehigh football program.
That season, Kreider caught 53 of quarterback of Mike Rieker’s passes for 1,181 yards and 12 touchdowns, many of them long-range completions which were game-breakers. And those figures, under NCAA rules, don't include postseason play where he picked up the pace even more. In the Engineers’ first round game in 1977 at the University of Massachusetts, Lehigh won 30-23 and Kreider scored all four Lehigh touchdowns on plays covering seven, eight, 35 and 71 yards in a game where he had nine receptions for 171 yards. For his career, Kreider caught 118 passes for 2,159 yards and 24 touchdowns.
He went on to play eight seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals, appearing in Super Bowl XVI vs. the San Francisco 49ers.
“Anyone who has ever watched me try to play golf will naturally interpret this announcement as a huge compliment to my teammates, to John Whitehead my coach, and to Mike Rieker the quarterback who made so many good things happen for me,” Kreider said of his induction.
Kreider went on to serve as a portfolio manager for Miller Anderson Sherrerd. He and his wife, Nancy ‘79 have four children, Kathryn, Suzanne, Ashleigh and Zachary.
