Prolific is the word to describe the career of Andrew Mittendorf ’99 on the pitch at Lehigh. Today, he holds honors still as a Lehigh record holder and the only Mountain Hawk soccer player to lead the NCAA in goals per game and be selected in the first round of the Major League Soccer draft.

Mittendorf was recruited to Lehigh as a defender. He worked his way up to midfield. By his junior year, he was the starting forward.

As a sophomore midfielder, he was recognized for inclusion in the All-Patriot League second team. But he found his stride as a junior when he was named first team All-Patriot League after starting all 19 games, scoring 13 goals, and assisting on 10 others. He also nabbed second team All-Region honors and made the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.

Over the course of his senior year, Mittendorf nearly doubled his output, netting 24 goals. That season the recognition piled up: Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year, first team All-Patriot League and first team All-Region.

Mittendorf then capped the season as a Major League Soccer first round draft selection by the Colorado Rapids. While his career with the Rapids lasted less than a season, he did play in Sweden and the U.S. with several clubs: Vartens IK, IF Brommapojkarna, Long Island, and the Hershey Wildcats.

He was selected to the Patriot League All-Decade Team and Patriot League 25th Anniversary Team. His success still reigns supreme in the Lehigh and Patriot League record books: First in career points, single season goals, single season points, single game goals, and single game points.

This recognition means more than words can express due to the purpose and criteria behind the selection process,” Mittendorf said. “It reflects the unwavering support of coaches, teammates, family, and friends. To be remembered among such accomplished athletes and people who have brought distinction to Lehigh is a privilege.”

With his playing days may have been behind him, soccer was still in his blood. Mittendorf co-founded Coastal Soccer in 2002, an organization dedicated to develop and train youth soccer players ages 5-12.

After selling that startup organization in 2006, he has spent the past two decades in various roles across finance in New York and Los Angeles including investment banking, asset management, and private investment.

Soccer isn’t gone. He has coached seasons for both of his children’s recreational leagues. Today, he, his wife, Kristine, daughter, Alma, and son, Emile, reside in Los Angeles where they are active in their local community and school.

“Lehigh is special for countless reasons,” Mittendorf said. “Each reason is unique to every individual who goes on to discover more about themselves and their potential than they ever imagined by utilizing the vast resources of the university. As a student, and especially as an alum, my experience has been that the deeper you engage with Lehigh, the more you uncover about yourself. In turn, you develop an inherent desire and special obligation to extend the same support to others."
