Ryan Yurchick is in his third season at Lehigh as a track and field assistant coach in charge of the throws. In his first year mentoring the throwers Yurchick was responsible for coaching one NCAA East Regional qualifier, one All-East Performer, three IC4A/ECAC qualifiers, and two All-Patriot League Performers. Each of the throwers on the team set new personal bests in nearly all of his or her respective events during the 2008-09 season.
Yurchick came to Lehigh after spending a year in Massachusetts as a Health Educator for grades 6-12 in the Rockport Public Schools. While at Rockport he was the head coach for the boys’ junior varsity basketball team, as well as the assistant varsity basketball coach. In the spring, he also coached the throwers at nearby Gloucester High School.
A native of Northwest Pennsylvania, Yurchick has been coaching high school and middle school throwers in that region since 2004. It was in that year that he and his brother decided to form the Allegheny Mountain Throwers Club. The non-profit organization is designed to provide year-round coaching and training for aspiring track and field athletes. To date, the club has helped to produce two PIAA state champions in the discus, and multiple PIAA state medal winners in the throws.
Yurchick worked with the throwing club while he continued his career as a student-athlete at Lock Haven University. Yurchick competed in the discus and hammer events while at Lock Haven. He was a three-time conference place winner in the discus. He earned a degree from Lock Haven in Health and Physical Education in 2007 and is currently pursuing his Master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Lehigh.
