Four-Run Fifth Pushes Lehigh Past Drexel Wednesday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – A two-run double by sophomore Kelly Fricker sparked a four-run fifth inning and the Lehigh softball team held on late to defeat Drexel 4-3 Wednesday afternoon at Leadership Park.
Macie Bergmann brought Drexel within one with a three-run home run in the seventh, but the Mountain Hawks threw out the tying run at home plate and then first-year Addison Moorman shut the door to close out a solid outing in the circle.
Lehigh improves to 16-14 with the victory.
Drexel (13-12) loaded the bases with nobody out in the top of the first, but Moorman retired the next three batters to get out of the jam. Moorman went on to retire 12 straight batters before Annabelle Smink led off the fifth with a single. Smink was then thrown out trying to go first to third on a sacrifice bunt attempt.
Singles by junior Holly Lovett and senior Sydney Parlett put runners on the corners with one out in the fifth. Fricker lashed a double off the center field fence bringing home two runs to give the Mountain Hawks a 2-0 lead. An infield single by junior Peyton Sward put runners at first and third again and Sward and Fricker worked some shenanigans on the bases, allowing Fricker to steal home, giving Lehigh a 3-0 lead. Sward scored Lehigh's fourth run following a Drexel throwing error after an infield single by senior Crysta Duenas.
Bergmann's home run brought Drexel within 4-3 with nobody out in the seventh. Smink followed with a single, and after a sacrifice bunt, pinch-runner Mckenna Rowlands was the tying run at second with one out. Olivia Sciulli singled up the middle and sophomore Helen Woloshyn's throw towards the cutoff was deflected behind home plate. Rowlands raced home looking to tie the game, but catcher Kyra Neiswender retrieved the ball and threw to Moorman, covering the plate, who tagged Rowlands out.
With Sciulli at third base and two outs, Moorman got Drexel's best hitter, Kylah Reading, to fly out to center field to end the game.
Moorman earned her sixth win of the season, allowing three runs on eight hits over seven innings. She walked one and struck out three.
Lehigh registered six hits off of two Drexel pitchers.
The Mountain Hawks resume Patriot League play this weekend when they travel to Boston University for a three-game series, featuring a doubleheader Saturday and a single game Sunday with action both days beginning at noon.
