Lehigh Falls at Rutgers in Frigid Midweek Tilt

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – First-year Kelly Fricker went 3-for-3 to lead Lehigh, but the Mountain Hawks fell 6-1 to Big Ten member Rutgers on a blustery Tuesday afternoon at the Rutgers Softball Complex.

Baileigh Burtis' two-run single in the third inning broke a 1-1 tie, with Rutgers adding on a run in the fourth and two more in the sixth to improve to 17-24 on the season.

Fricker had three of Lehigh's four hits and also drew a walk. Senior Julia Mrochko's first-inning single was Lehigh's other hit. The Mountain Hawks are now 18-19 on the season.

The Mountain Hawks had two hits in the first inning but were unable to score.

LA Matthews opened the scoring with a solo home run in the bottom of the first.

In the second, Lehigh tied the game as senior Lindsey Martin drew a leadoff walk and eventually came around to score when sophomore Holly Lovett's ground ball could not be handled by Matthews at first base.

Rutgers added a run in the fourth on a Jillian Anderson RBI single and then two more in the sixth on a Matthews single and a bases loaded walk to Bailey Briggs.

Junior Chloe Hess started in the circle and allowed three runs on five hits over three innings. Senior Maria Urban allowed a run on a hit over two innings of relief, while sophomore Maddy Clark pitched the sixth, allowing two runs.

Lehigh resumes Patriot League play this weekend with a three-game series at Colgate with a doubleheader set for Saturday at noon and a single game Sunday at noon.
