FORT MYERS, Fla. – Lehigh opened its spring break trip to Florida by splitting two games Saturday at the FCGU Spring Break Classic. The Mountain Hawks began the day with a 3-2 victory over Toledo before dropping their nightcap to 7-4 to Columbia.

Senior Maddy Schmeiser totaled four hits across the two games for Lehigh, with the Mountain Hawks now standing at 5-12 on the season.

Against Toledo (5-13), Schmeiser stole home as part of a double steal with senior Rory Dudley to open the scoring in the second inning. The Rockets tied the game in the bottom of the third as Audrey Miller singled home Sidney Griffith.

Dudley put Lehigh in front for good with a two-out, two-run double in the sixth that scored Schmeiser and senior Julia Mrochko.

Miller led off the bottom of the sixth with a home run, but junior Chloe Hess retired the final six Rockets in order to secure her second victory of the season.

Hess allowed two runs on five hits over seven innings. She struck out four and did not walk a batter.

Columbia (4-5) opened the scoring in game two on Cami Neal's two-out RBI double in the bottom of the first inning.

Lehigh took the lead with a two-out rally of its own in the third, as first-year Kelly Fricker singled home sophomore Peyton Sward and then Mrochko brought home sophomore Gracie Smith with a double to left field.

Payton Shimansky's RBI double tied the game at 2-2 after three innings of play.

Schmeiser put Lehigh back in front with an RBI single that scored Fricker in the fifth, but Columbia responded with five runs in the bottom of the frame, highlighted by a three-run Neal double, to take a 7-3 lead.

Smith brought Lehigh within 7-4 with an RBI double in the sixth, but the Mountain Hawks could get no closer. Lehigh out-hit Columbia 10-8 but left nine runners on base.

Senior Maria Urban started in the circle for Lehigh and was charged with five runs on eight hits over 4.2 innings with three strikeouts and two walks. Sophomore Maddy Clark and first-year Madison Finnerty also saw action in the circle against the Lions.

The Mountain Hawks will face the same two teams again on Sunday, with Lehigh facing Columbia at 10 a.m. and Toledo at 12:30 p.m.
